School Resource Officer

Under a grant from the State of Arizona's Safe Schools program, the School Resource Officer (SRO) is a uniformed officer that works in conjunction with a juvenile probation officer on the school campus. While focusing mainly on the middle school through high school programs, the goal of the SRO is to provide deterrence as well as enforcement.

Education programs call for teaching law-related education, which encourages good citizenship and an emphasis on the rights and purposes of the Constitution. The 60 hours per semester of classroom contact focuses on involving students in thought-provoking interpretation of the spirit and intent of the law. The SRO program creates an active participation by students through field trips to the State Legislature, City Council meetings, and other civic programs that encourage leadership and good citizenship.

Housewatch Program

The Police Department honors requests from citizens to conduct security checks of their homes when the owners are on vacation. While the occasional security checks cannot guarantee that the property will be safe from vandalism or burglary, participation in this program can heighten the awareness of the patrol officers to activities on the property while the owner is away.

To participate in this program, click here to download an application for the Housewatch Request for Security Check. (Requires the Adobe Acrobat© reader, which can also be downloaded for free.)

Ride Along

The community Ride Along program is designed for adults and youth who wish to gain a better understanding of the role of policing. The participant may request specific areas or an officer to observe, and the length of the ride along may vary due to circumstances. Safety of the participant and police personnel are the primary concern. Click here to download a Citizen Ride Along Request form. Animal Control

The St. Johns Police Department provides an Animal Control Officer. Tags are required for all dogs, and includes vaccination records. Dogs can be licensed for $5/year or $15 for 3 years. Please contact the Animal Control Officer at (928) 337-2440 for information or reports on nuisance animals. Fines and citations can be issued for loose animals or repeated nuisance problems.

    Fire

The St. Johns Volunteer Fire Department consists of 15 volunteers who undergo basic firefighting training at the local community college. The Department utilizes a 3,000-gallon pumper, and a smaller, 750-gallon capacity truck. Known collectively as the St. Johns Emergency Services, the Fire Department and Ambulance Service handle approximately 900 runs per year.

Each year, in conjunction with the local Allstate Insurance representative, the Fire Department works with the local schools to present a fire prevention class. CPR classes are also offered throughout the year; residents and groups interested in this free class should contact the Fire Station to request an instructor who can come onsite to teach the class.

A new fire cadet program, taught through the Northern Arizona Vocational Institute of Technology, or NAVIT is also offered as a one-year program through the local high school. This program includes classroom instruction, as well has hands-on training with the Fire Department.

    Ambulance Service

As a part of the St. Johns Emergency Services, which includes the Fire Station, the Ambulance Services department consists of 10 Emergency Medical Technicians and 4 Paramedics. Using the Navapache Regional Medical Center in Show Low as the base hospital, ambulance service is provided in the area surrounding St. Johns, for a coverage area of 2,200 square miles.

Individuals are transported to either Navapache Regional Medical Center, or the White Mountain Regional Medical Center in nearby Springerville. The volunteer EMT's and Paramedics undergo extensive training at the local community college, Northland Pioneer College, for their certification.

The three ambulances are housed in the St. Johns Fire Station.

The Emergency Services and Airport Operations are handled by Gary Liston. Originally from Southern Utah, Gary moved to St. Johns 15 years ago as the Airport Manager. He is excited about the growth in St. Johns, and has a goal to increase the number of EMT's to keep up with growth in the area.
